DiDi Chuxing in China: A Complete Guide for Foreigners (Download, Booking & Payment)

Navigating mainland China’s hyper-modern transport system can be intimidating for international tourists. Traditional street-hailing taxis are increasingly rare, and the language barrier often makes directing a driver nearly impossible. This is where DiDi Chuxing (滴滴出行), China's premier ride-hailing super-app, becomes an absolute digital survival tool.

Thankfully, DiDi is highly accessible to foreigners, offering a robust English interface, international credit card registration, and an in-app translation feature that bridges the communication gap with drivers. This comprehensive step-by-step guide covers how to download, set up, book, and pay for a DiDi ride to ensure a seamless travel experience in China.

Travel tips: You should never take a taxi in China.

1) You won't be able to communicate with drivers. While traveling in China, you will hardly come across any Chinese drivers who can speak English.

2) No communication is required : You simply pinpoint your destination in the map and the willing driver will respond to your request and come pick you up. Just type and show the last four digits of your phone number to the driver. That's it.

3) Taxi is more expensive than Didi. Didi is approx 30% cheaper. However, if you choose luxury vehicle you need to pay for higher services.

4) So many options in Didi. It is like Uber. Mostly private cars and you can choose a variety of options including comfort sedan, MPV, 6 seaters and German manufacturers.

1. How to Download and Set Up the DiDi App

Before you set foot in China, it is highly recommended to download and configure the app while you still have unrestricted internet access.

Step 1: Downloading the App

You can find the app on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

  • Search for "DiDi-China" or "DiDi - Ride Hailing".

  • Note: Ensure you download the international/Greater China version, which supports English, rather than the purely Chinese domestic version.

Step 2: Registration and Phone Verification

  1. Open the app and select your country code (e.g., +1 for the US, +44 for the UK, +82 for South Korea).
  2. Enter your mobile phone number.
  3. Input the 6-digit verification code sent via SMS.

  • Crucial Tip: Make sure your phone can receive international SMS text messages while traveling, or complete this setup before leaving your home country.

Step 3: Switching to English

If the app does not automatically default to English, you can manually change it:

  1. Tap the profile icon in the top-left corner.
  2. Look for the settings gear icon (设置).
  3. Select Language (语言) and switch it to English.

2. Linking an International Payment Method

China operates on a fundamentally cashless economy. While local citizens rely heavily on WeChat Pay and Alipay, DiDi makes it incredibly convenient for international travelers by allowing direct linkage to foreign credit cards.

How to Add Your Credit Card:

  1. Tap your profile icon in the top-left corner and select "Wallet" or "Payment".
  2. Select "Add Credit/Debit Card".
  3. DiDi officially supports major international card networks, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and JCB.
  4. Input your card details, expiration date, and CVV code.
  5. Complete the 3D Secure verification if prompted by your home bank.

💡 Local Travel Hack: While linking your card directly to DiDi works seamlessly, it is highly beneficial to also set up an Alipay or WeChat Pay account linked to your foreign card as a backup. DiDi fully supports payments channeled through Alipay and WeChat Pay.

3. Step-by-Step: How to Book a Ride on DiDi

Once your account and payment methods are fully verified, booking a ride is straightforward and mirrors apps like Uber or Lyft.

Step 1: Enter Your Destination

On the home screen, you will see a map and a search bar that says "Where to?".

  • Type your destination in English or Chinese characters. The app's built-in Google Maps or Gaode Maps integration is highly proficient at recognizing major tourist landmarks, hotels, and subway stations in English.

  • Double-check the exact address, as some hotels may have multiple branches in the same city.

Step 2: Choose Your Ride Vehicle Type

DiDi offers several tiers of service tailored to different budgets and preferences:

  • Express (快车 - Kuaiche): The most popular, affordable option for everyday travel. Ideal for 1–4 passengers with minimal luggage.

  • Taxi (出租车 - Chuzuche): Standard metered local taxis dispatched via the DiDi platform.

  • Premier (专车 - Zhuanche): A premium service featuring high-end vehicles (like Audi or BMW), professional drivers in uniforms, bottled water, and phone chargers. Excellent for business travelers or those seeking extra comfort.

  • Luxe (豪华车 - Haohuache): First-class luxury vehicles offering the highest tier of customized hospitality.

Step 3: Confirm and Wait for Your Driver

After selecting your vehicle tier, tap "Confirm Request". The app will match you with a nearby driver and display the car's license plate number, color, vehicle model, and the driver's current location on the map.

4. In-Ride Communication Tips for Foreigners

One of the greatest anxieties for travelers is communicating with a local driver who does not speak English. DiDi solves this with a brilliant in-app real-time translation chat feature.

Using In-App Chat

  • If the driver messages you to ask about your exact pickup location, the app automatically translates their Chinese text into English.

  • When you reply in English, the app instantly translates your text into Chinese for the driver.

  • You can also use pre-set translated phrases like "I am waiting at the main entrance" or "Please wait a moment."

Boarding the Vehicle

When the car arrives, always verify the license plate number displayed on your app before entering the vehicle. Once inside, the driver will occasionally ask for the last 4 digits of your registered phone number to verify your identity. Simply show them your phone screen or say the numbers in English/Chinese.

5. Payment and Completing Your Trip

When you reach your destination, you do not need to pull out cash or manually swipe your card.

  • The final fare is automatically calculated based on time and distance (plus any applicable highway tolls).

  • The fee will be automatically deducted from your pre-linked international credit card, Alipay, or WeChat Pay account.

  • Once the transaction is processed, you can simply thank the driver ("Xie Xie") and exit the vehicle.

6. Other very useful tips

1) Adding Stop Over Function

If you want to share Didi with another passenger, you can add Stop Over as below. For convenience, those who are going to the destination(the farther) should call Didi since Didi is location-based application.

Once the stop over is reached. The driver will stop at the stop over and one person can get off and continue driving to the destination.

2) Edit Dropoff(Destination) Function

If you do not know the exact drop-off point of the destination, you just call Didi  and get on the vehicle, with some place near the destination. While getting closer to the destination, you can edit the specific location of your destination

3) At the parking lot of airports & train stations.

This could be one of the very useful tips. You just arrived at the airport or the train station, feeling new to the new environment and perplexed by so many people waiting for Didi.

Once you exit, follow the E-Hailing sign

Once you arrive the parking lot(E-Hailing) specific for Didi travelers, you take a picture of parking lot number you are standing. And as soon as booking a ride, you send the pictures to the driver (Click Message Icon) thru Didi app and the driver will be there. No verbal communication is required.

If you do not send pictures, the Didi driver will keep calling you until you respond to find out where you are standing .
