However, once you land on Chinese soil,
there is one critical legal requirement that every single foreign traveler must
fulfill: Accommodation Registration (historically known as Zhusù Dēngjì / 住宿登记). Failure to comply can result in warnings, hefty fines, or
complications during future entry.
Fortunately, registering your stay is
completely digital and—most importantly—100% FREE. In this guide, we
will break down exactly how to register your stay, who needs to do it, and how
to protect yourself from fake third-party websites trying to scam your credit
card data.
1. What is China’s Accommodation Registration Rule?
Under Article 39 of the Exit and Entry
Administration Law of the People's Republic of China, all foreign visitors
staying in mainland China must register their place of lodging with local
public security organs (the police) within 24 hours of arrival.
How it applies to your trip:
- If you are staying at a Hotel: You
don't need to do anything! When you check in at a licensed hotel, hostel,
or resort, the front desk staff will automatically scan your passport and
submit your registration data directly to the local police database.
- If you are staying at an Airbnb, Rental Apartment, or a
Friend’s/Relative's Home: You (or your
host) must manually register your accommodation. This is where most
independent travelers get confused, but the National Immigration
Administration (NIA) has recently streamlined the process online.

2. Step-by-Step: How to Register Your Stay Online
The National Immigration Administration
(NIA) officially pilots and provides an all-in-one digital portal for
foreigners to file their accommodation registration from their smartphones or
laptops without needing to physically visit a local police station.
Step 1: Access the Authorized Government
System
Always conduct your official registrations
through the legitimate central network.

NIA Government Portal: s.nia.gov.cn
Alternatively, you can download the
official mobile application "NIA 12367" or search for the "NIA
12367" mini-program directly within WeChat or Alipay.
Important Information!!
- Since each district or major city is operating the system respectively I cannot provide the unified QR.
- You should search the QR specifically for where you are staying
Step 2: Account Creation & Identity
Verification
Create an account using your email address
or mobile phone number. You will need to complete a brief facial or identity
verification using your passport details.
Step 3: Fill Out the Accommodation Form
Navigate to the "Accommodation
Registration" module under the Foreigner Service tab and input the
following details:
- Personal Information: Full name
(exactly as it appears on your passport data page), passport number,
nationality, and date of birth.
- Visa/Entry Status: Your entry date,
port of entry, and your visa type (or select "Visa-Exempt" if
you entered under the 30-day waiver program).
- Address Details: The precise
physical address of where you are staying, including the province, city,
district, street name, building number, and apartment unit.
- Host Information: If you are
staying with a friend or family member, input their Chinese ID or valid
resident passport number.
Step 4: Upload Supporting Photos
You will be prompted to take or upload a
few photos:
- A clear picture of your passport data page.
- A photo of the Chinese entry stamp placed in your
passport by airport customs.
- (Highly Recommended) A photo of the host's property ownership
certificate or lease agreement if staying at a private home.
Step 5: Submit and Download the Receipt
Once submitted, the system usually reviews
and approves the application automatically or within a few hours. Go to your "Registration
Record Inquiry" to view and download your electronic Registration
Form of Temporary Residence for Visitors. Keep a copy or a screenshot on
your phone as proof of legal stay.
3. Critical Warning: Beware of Fake Accommodation Registration
Websites!
Because accommodation registration is
mandatory, cybercriminals have created fraudulent, look-alike websites
pretending to be official Chinese immigration portals.
These scam sites are optimized to rank
highly on search engines when you search keywords like "China
accommodation registration online" or "Zhusù Dēngjì form English."
The Reality: Registration is 100% FREE
The official Chinese government system never
charges a single cent for submitting an accommodation registration or
generating an arrival record. It is completely free of charge.
Red Flags of a Scam Site:
- Asking for Payment: If a website
asks for an "expedited processing fee," "service fee,"
or "foreigner registration tax" (ranging anywhere from $20 to
$80 USD), close the window immediately.
- Demanding Credit/Debit Card Numbers: The legitimate s.nia.gov.cn
platform will never require you to enter credit card numbers, CVV security
codes, or bank information to complete a residence declaration.
- Suspicious Web Domains: Fake sites
mimic government layouts but use domains ending in .com, .org, .net, or .co.
Remember, authorized official portals in mainland China always end with
the .gov.cn suffix.
Risks of Using Scam Sites:
If you fall into the trap of an unofficial
portal, you risk financial credit card fraud, identity theft
(since you are uploading your raw passport images), and legal penalty.
Because the scam site does not actually submit your details to the Chinese
police, you will remain unregistered in the eyes of the law, making you liable
for overstay/illegal residence fines upon exiting China.
