When people think of architectural wonders, historic structures like the Great Wall or the Forbidden City often come to mind. While China’s ancient heritage is undeniably breathtaking, its modern urban landscapes have undergone the fastest and most radical architectural revolution in human history.
Today, China’s mega-cities boast some of the most futuristic, gravity-defying, and mind-boggling skyscrapers, cultural centers, and bridges in the world. For travelers, architecture enthusiasts, and photography lovers, these urban centers look less like the present day and more like a sci-fi movie set.
Because the country's landscape of innovation is so vast, we have broken our ultimate architectural guide into two parts. In Part 1, we explore the first 10 architectural marvels in China’s mega-cities that will absolutely amaze you.
Sky-High Icons and Engineering Feats
1. Shanghai Tower (Shanghai) – The Twisted Green Giant
Rising a staggering 632 meters (2,073 feet) above the financial hub of Lujiazui, the Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in China and the third-tallest in the world.
The Marvel: Its iconic 120-degree twist is not just for aesthetics; the aerodynamic curved design reduces wind loads on the building by 24%, saving millions in structural materials. Furthermore, it features a double-skin glass facade that functions like a thermos flask, drastically reducing energy costs.
Best Viewpoint: Head to the Jin Mao Tower or the Bund waterfront across the river to capture its spiraling silhouette against the clouds.
2. CCTV Headquarters (Beijing) – The "Big Underpants"
Designed by the famous architectural firm OMA (led by Rem Koolhaas and Ole Scheeren), the Central China Television (CCTV) Headquarters completely reimagined the traditional skyscraper.
The Marvel: Instead of a conventional tower rising toward the sky, this 234-meter structure is a continuous loop of two leaning towers connected by a massive 75-meter cantilevered perpendicular overhang that appears to float in mid-air. Locals affectionately call it Da Kucha (The Big Underpants) due to its unique shape.
Best Viewpoint: The street corner of the Beijing CBD (Central Business District) offers a dramatic, low-angle perspective of its geometric form.
3. Canton Tower (Guangzhou) – The Slim, Twisting Supertall
Once holding the title of the tallest tower in the world, the 604-meter Canton Tower serves as a striking astronomical observation and television broadcasting hub in Southern China.
The Marvel: Designed with a hyper-curved lattice structure, the tower is famous for its narrow "waistline," earning it the nickname "Supermodel's Waist." At night, it comes alive with a magnificent, color-shifting LED light show that illuminates the entire Pearl River Delta skyline.
Best Viewpoint: Take a night cruise along the Pearl River or view it from the expansive green lawns of Huacheng Square.
Gravity-Defying and Futuristic Designs
4. Raffles City Chongqing – The Horizontal Skyscraper
Located at the historic confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, Raffles City Chongqing is a jaw-dropping masterclass in structural engineering designed by world-renowned architect Moshe Safdie.
The Marvel: This mega-complex features a row of eight soaring towers, but the true marvel is The Crystal—a massive, 300-meter-long horizontal skybridge enclosed in glass and steel that sits on top of four of the core towers. It features an indoor forest, swimming pools, restaurants, and a glass-bottomed viewing deck hanging 250 meters in the air.
Best Viewpoint: Cross the Grand Theater metro station plaza on the opposite riverbank for a panoramic view of this futuristic "shipping sail" design.
5. Harbin Grand Theatre (Harbin) – The Snow-Inspired Cultural Oasis
Designed by China's own MAD Architects (led by Ma Yansong), the Harbin Grand Theatre looks as if it was sculpted entirely by the freezing winds and heavy snow of Northeast China.
The Marvel: The building’s smooth, organic, and curving white aluminum facade seamlessly blends into the surrounding wetlands, mimicking the flow of glaciers. Inside, the main auditorium is sculpted from rich, warm Manchurian Ash wood, creating a striking contrast with the icy, sci-fi exterior.
Best Viewpoint: Walk along the elevated wooden pathways winding through the surrounding river marshes to capture the theater’s interaction with nature.
6. InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland (Songjiang) – The Groundscraper
While most architects race to touch the sky, the creators of this luxury hotel decided to look deep down into the earth.
The Marvel: Built directly inside the sheer rock faces of an abandoned, deep quarry, this 18-story resort is an engineering miracle with 16 of its floors technically underground. The bottom two floors are entirely submerged beneath an artificial lake, featuring underwater guest suites and an aquarium restaurant.
Best Viewpoint: You must visit the resort grounds or stay as a guest to experience the dramatic quarry-wall waterfalls and glass skywalks.
Cultural Masterpieces and Parametric Wonders
7. Galaxy SOHO (Beijing) – The Fluid, No-Corner Complex
Another iconic Beijing landmark, Galaxy SOHO was designed by the legendary Zaha Hadid. It stands as a brilliant monument to her signature fluid, organic style.
The Marvel: The complex consists of four dome-like structures connected by elevated bridges and sweeping terraces. There are virtually no sharp corners or straight lines in the entire complex, creating a sense of continuous movement and a deeply futuristic internal courtyard.
Best Viewpoint: Stand in the center of the interior courtyard at dusk and look upward as the flowing LED strip lights turn on.
8. New Century Global Center (Chengdu) – The Largest Building on Earth
When it comes to sheer scale, Chengdu’s New Century Global Center is unmatched. It holds the title of the world's largest building by floor area—measuring a colossal 1.7 million square meters.
The Marvel: The building is so massive it has its own internal ecosystem. Inside the wave-shaped structure, you will find an entire artificial seaside resort with a 400-meter indoor beach, a massive water park, an IMAX theater, a luxury hotel, and a replica Mediterranean shopping village.
Best Viewpoint: The grand plaza and dancing fountains directly in front of the main entrance give you a true sense of its mind-boggling scale.
9. Ping An Finance Centre (Shenzhen) – The Stainless Steel Monolith
Rising 599 meters over the tech capital of Shenzhen, the Ping An Finance Centre is the second-tallest building in China and a symbol of the city's meteoric economic rise.
The Marvel: The tower’s tapered design utilizes a massive 1,700 tons of high-grade stainless steel. This unique exterior allows the building to resist the harsh, salty coastal weather and typhoon-force winds common to the region.
Best Viewpoint: Head up to the top of Lianhuashan Park for an uninterrupted, postcard-perfect view of Shenzhen's modern skyline.
10. Changsha Meixihu International Culture & Arts Centre (Changsha) – The Desert Rose
Also designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, this breathtaking lakeside complex in Hunan province is a striking example of fluid parametric architecture.
The Marvel: From above, the three main buildings resemble a cluster of blooming white desert roses or elegant ribbons frozen mid-air. The sweeping white fiberglass panels form paths and plazas that seamlessly connect a grand theater, a contemporary art museum, and a multi-purpose hall.
Best Viewpoint: Capture the reflections of the illuminated white structures across the calm waters of Meixi Lake at night.
